Water-mist fire suppression is a method of fire fighting that is dependent on three aspects namely: water, compressed air/gas, and special nozzles that work together to create a fine water mist that is used to put out fires.
Depending on the type of system a complete water-mist fire suppression system can consist of a water source, compressed air or gas,
hoses, control panel, fire detectors, alarms, and special discharge nozzles.
When the high pressurized water in the hose reaches the nozzle, the nozzle becomes responsible for dispersing the water into a mist that is comprised almost entirely of fine droplets. Droplet sizes are controlled by adjusting the discharge pressure of the nozzle. Compared to conventional sprinkler's water drops with a size of 5000 µm (microns) these tiny drops are less than 1000 µm in diameter. The reason for these tiny drops is to create a larger surface area. Remember, surface area is the means by which a state of matter interacts with its surroundings. So, as particle size decreases, the surface area per unit volume (or mass) increases. See image right.
The benefit of the increased surface area is to generate a greater volume of steam when the large surface area of the water interacts with a fire. This in turn drags more energy out of the fire whereas the heat energy is “transferred” to the steam generated. It is easier and quicker for a fire to turn 5 x 1000 micron droplets of water into steam than it is for it to turn a 5000 micron drop into steam.
Oxygen is further limited by the blanketing effect the droplets have over the fire due to its larger more dense surface area.
Water-mist systems are mainly used in indoor environments or areas that are un-affected by air movement that require fire protection whilst
limiting water damage and saving water usage. Many hospitals make use of water-mist for its harmless and non-contaminant effects.
Trains are also a common application for water-mist systems.
